The Church of San Paio de Antealtares is one of Santiago de Compostela’s most atmospheric sacred spaces, closely linked to the city’s earliest devotion to the Apostle James. Founded in the ninth century as part of a monastery for Benedictine nuns, it originally stood beside the first shrine that guarded the apostle’s relics, giving the site deep historical and spiritual significance. The current church, rebuilt mainly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, reflects a serene Baroque style with a simple façade that opens onto the quiet square of Praza da Quintana. The Igrexa de San Paio de Antealtares is located in the heart of Santiago de Compostela’s old town, attached to the Benedictine monastery of San Paio de Antealtares, on the western side of the Praza da Quintana, directly opposite the cathedral’s Puerta Santa (Holy Door). tands just a few steps from the Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, forming part of the cathedral’s monumental complex in the UNESCO World Heritage centre, with its main entrance from the top of the steps on the Praza da Quintana and the monastery’s famous long Baroque wall facing the square. Nearby are the cathedral, the Praza do Obradoiro, the Praza das Praterías, the Pazo de Raxoi city hall, the Hostal dos Reis Católicos (Parador), and the Colexio de Fonseca (university rectorate), all within the compact historic core. The surrounding area is full of cafés, restaurants, the main shopping streets (Rúa do Franco, Rúa Nova, Praza de Cervantes), the Mercado de Abastos food market, and the main pilgrimage routes, making the church very easy to reach on foot from the city’s main hotels and cultural sites.
