The Colexiata de Santa María do Sar is one of Santiago de Compostela’s most distinctive Romanesque churches, renowned for the striking tilt of its columns and arches, a result of centuries of ground movement near the Sar River. Founded in the twelfth century, the church preserves its original basilica layout with three naves, thick stone pillars and a serene, almost rural atmosphere despite its proximity to the historic centre. The slight leaning of the interior arcades gives the building a unique visual rhythm that fascinates visitors and highlights the resilience of medieval engineering. Attached to the church is a beautifully restored cloister, one of the few Romanesque cloisters remaining in Galicia, offering a peaceful space framed by elegant arches and sculpted capitals. The Colexiata de Santa María do Sar is located on Rúa de Sar, in the Sar neighbourhood of Santiago de Compostela, on the banks of the Río Sar, just to the east of the city centre, about a 15–20 minute walk from the cathedral and the main historic squares. It stands in a quieter, more residential part of the city, near the Sar river and the Sar garden area, close to the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela’s Hospital Clínico (Santiago University Clinical Hospital) and the main road out towards Padrón and the Rías Baixas. Nearby landmarks include the Galician National Museum of the People (Museo do Pobo Galego), the Alameda park, the Mercado de Abastos food market, and the main university and hospital complexes, all within a short walk or bus ride into the compact old town.
