The Soares dos Reis National Museum is one of Portugal’s most important cultural institutions, housed in the elegant Carrancas Palace in the heart of Porto. Founded in 1833, it is the country’s oldest public art museum and is named after António Soares dos Reis, one of Portugal’s greatest sculptors. Its collections span painting, sculpture, decorative arts, ceramics, jewellery and furniture, offering a rich journey through Portuguese artistic heritage from the 16th to the 20th century. Highlights include masterpieces of Romanticism and Naturalism, as well as the museum’s renowned sculpture gallery dedicated to Soares dos Reis himself. The palace’s refined interiors and peaceful garden create an atmosphere that encourages slow, thoughtful exploration. The Soares dos Reis National Museum is housed in the neoclassical Palácio dos Carrancas at Rua de D. Manuel II 44, in central Porto, just west of the historic Baixa district. It sits a short walk from the Palácio de Cristal gardens and the Super Bock Arena – Pavilhão Rosa Mota, offering sweeping views over the Douro River, and is also close to Cordoaria Garden, the Clérigos Tower area, and art-filled streets leading back toward São Bento station and Avenida dos Aliados, making it easy to combine a museum visit with riverside strolls and major city landmarks.
