Designed in the 19th century, the gardens were created to surround the former Crystal Palace, a grand exhibition hall that once stood at the site. Today, the area is shaped by themed gardens, sculpted terraces and winding avenues lined with camellias, magnolias and exotic trees. Peacocks roam freely across the lawns, adding charm to the serene atmosphere. From the upper viewpoints, visitors enjoy some of the best panoramas over the Douro River and the city’s terraced rooftops. The Jardins do Palácio de Cristal are located at Rua Dom Manuel II in Porto's Massarelos district, perched on a hill overlooking the Douro River, near the Foz do Douro area. These romantic 19th-century gardens feature peacocks, ponds, and panoramic bridge views, with the modern Rosa Mota Pavilion (formerly the Crystal Palace site) anchoring one end, plus the Capela do Carlos Alberto chapel and Romantic Museum nearby. The area connects easily to the art galleries of Rua Miguel Bombarda, Clérigos Tower downhill, and bus routes to Ribeira waterfront or Foz beaches.
