The Luís I Bridge is one of Porto’s most iconic landmarks, spanning the Douro River with a sweeping iron arch that has defined the city’s skyline since the late 19th century. Designed by engineer Théophile Seyrig, a former partner of Gustave Eiffel, the bridge showcases the bold engineering spirit of the Industrial Age. Its two levels connect Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, carrying both pedestrians and traffic while offering some of the best panoramic views in the region. The upper deck, now used by the metro and walkers, provides a dramatic vantage point over the Ribeira district, the wine cellars of Gaia and the river’s winding course. By day, the bridge’s structure gleams against the city’s colourful façades; by night, it becomes a luminous silhouette reflected in the water. More than a functional crossing, the Luís I Bridge is a symbol of Porto’s identity, blending history, innovation and unforgettable scenery.

The Luís I Bridge, an iconic double-decker iron arch bridge, spans the Douro River connecting central Porto on the north bank to Vila Nova de Gaia on the south. Built between 1881-1886 by engineer Théophile Seyrig, its upper deck carries the metro and pedestrians while the lower handles vehicles and foot traffic, offering stunning panoramas of the river and cityscape. On the Porto side, it meets the UNESCO-listed Ribeira district with its colorful waterfront buildings, riverside cafés, and sites like Igreja de São Francisco and Casa do Infante museum; across in Gaia, port wine cellars, the Serra do Pilar Monastery, and Teleférico cable car await, with nearby attractions including Porto Cathedral uphill and the lively Terreiro da Sé square.
