The Tower of Pedro‑Sem is one of Porto’s lesser‑known medieval landmarks, offering a rare glimpse into the fortified residences that once shaped the city’s early urban landscape. Dating back to the Middle Ages, the tower belonged to the noble Pedro‑Sem family and served both as a defensive structure and a symbol of status within the old town. Its robust stone walls, narrow openings, and vertical silhouette reflect the architectural style of medieval Porto, when such towers formed part of a network of private strongholds. Although much of the surrounding complex has disappeared over time, the tower remains an evocative reminder of the city’s feudal past. Today, it stands quietly integrated into the historic fabric near the Sé Cathedral, inviting visitors to imagine the daily life, rivalries, and power dynamics that once animated the medieval streets of Porto. Tower of Pedro-Sem is located at Rua da Boa Nova in the Lordelo do Ouro e Massarelos parish of Porto, integrated into the rear of the Palácio dos Terenas. This 14th-century medieval tower-house stands on the former Quinta da Boa Vista estate near the historic western edge of the medieval city. Nearby are the lush public gardens and Soares dos Reis National Museum of the Palácio de Cristal, the riverside walks along the Douro toward the Ribeira district, the Monastery of Serra do Pilar across the Luís I Bridge, and easy access to Foz do Douro beaches and the Massarelos area with its workshops and seafood tavernas.
