The Episcopal Palace of Porto is one of the city’s most striking historic landmarks, rising beside the cathedral and overlooking the Douro River. Once the residence of the bishops of Porto, the palace reflects centuries of ecclesiastical power and artistic refinement. Its origins date back to the medieval period, but the building gained its grand Baroque appearance in the 18th century, with an imposing façade and elegant interiors that include ornate staircases, painted ceilings, and richly decorated halls. From its windows, visitors enjoy some of the most impressive views of the historic centre and the riverbanks of Ribeira and Vila Nova de Gaia. The Episcopal Palace of Porto is located at Terreiro da Sé in the heart of the historic center, directly adjacent to the south side of Porto Cathedral. This hilltop landmark offers commanding views over the Douro River and Ribeira district below. Nearby you'll find the UNESCO-listed Sé Cathedral with its cloister and terraces, atmospheric Escadas das Verdades stairs descending to Ribeira's riverside cafés and port wine cellars, São Bento Station famed for its azulejo tiles, and the Clérigos Tower just a short walk uphill amid the bustling old town streets.
