Built for the influential Morais e Castro family, the palace showcases a refined façade with sculpted stonework, tall windows, and a stately entrance that once welcomed the city’s elite. Inside, its grand staircase and spacious halls hint at a past filled with social gatherings, political meetings, and moments of aristocratic life. Over the centuries, the building has served various roles, including housing cultural institutions and exhibitions that highlight Porto’s artistic heritage. Although time has left its mark, the palace remains a striking presence in the historic centre, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s noble past. The Palace of São João Novo is located at Largo de São João Novo 11 in the historic center of Porto, within the civil parish encompassing Cedofeita, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Miragaia, São Nicolau and Vitória. This late 18th-century Baroque residence sits on a gentle slope backed by remnants of the Fernandine Walls, with its main facade facing the square. Adjacent lies Igreja de São João Novo church, while moments away stand Miradouro da Vitória viewpoint, Igreja de São Francisco, Palácio da Bolsa stock exchange palace, and Museu das Marionetas do Porto puppet museum. The area connects easily to Cais da Ribeira waterfront, Capela das Almas, and the vibrant Ribeira district along the Douro River. ​
