Brugse Vrije is one of Bruges’ most historically significant buildings, once serving as the administrative centre of the “Free of Bruges,” a region that enjoyed a unique degree of autonomy for centuries. Standing on Burg Square beside the City Hall, the building blends Gothic and Renaissance elements, reflecting the evolving power and prestige of the local magistrates who worked there. Its most striking feature is the ornate façade with gilded details and sculpted figures that celebrate justice and civic authority. Inside, the highlight is the Renaissance Hall, adorned with an impressive 16th‑century fireplace carved by Lanceloot Blondeel and executed by Guyot de Beaugrant, a masterpiece that symbolises the unity of law and governance. Today, Brugse Vrije offers visitors a glimpse into Bruges’ political past, preserving the atmosphere of a place where decisions shaping the city were once made.

Brugse Vrije (Liberty of Bruges) is located at Burg 11a on Burg Square in the historic center of Bruges, Belgium, directly opposite Bruges City Hall. This Renaissance mansion from the 16th century, featuring a monumental fireplace tribute to Emperor Charles V, once governed the surrounding countryside and later served as a courthouse until 1984. Immediate neighbors include Bruges City Hall and Basilica of the Holy Blood on the same square. Just 100 meters away lies the Markt square with its iconic Belfry tower. Short walks connect to canal landmarks like Rozenhoedkaai viewpoint, Gruuthusemuseum at Dijver 17, Groeninge Museum, Saint John's Hospital Museum, Church of Our Lady, Bonifacius Bridge, and Arentshof gardens.
