Minnewater, known as the Lake of Love, is located in the southwest of Bruges’ historic centre, just beyond the city ramparts and a short walk from the train station via the striking Bargebrug (Barge Bridge). This romantic 13th-century basin, once a vital inland port for medieval trade, nestles beside lush Minnewater Park with its swan-filled waters, weeping willows, and peaceful paths, reachable in 20 minutes on foot from Grote Markt along Wollestraat and the canals. Nearby lie the UNESCO Princely Begijnhof (Beguinage) across Wijngaardbrug with its serene courtyard and Begijnhofkapel, Gentpoort (city gate) to the south, Church of Our Lady 0.5 miles north, and the southern canals including Rozenhoedkaai a bit further. Horse-drawn carriages often start from the park’s north end, while the adjacent Sashuis lockhouse and remnants of old city walls add historic charm to this idyllic retreat blending nature, legend, and easy access to Bruges’ medieval core.
