Slot Zuylen is one of the oldest and most atmospheric castles in the Utrecht region, set along the quiet bends of the River Vecht in the village of Oud‑Zuilen. Originally built in the 13th century as a fortified donjon, it was destroyed during the Hook and Cod Wars in 1422 and later rebuilt in the early 16th century, evolving from a defensive stronghold into a refined noble residence. Over the centuries it became closely associated with the Van Zuylen family, whose most famous member, the writer Belle van Zuylen, spent her youth here and later drew inspiration from its surroundings. The castle’s interiors reflect layers of aristocratic life, from richly furnished salons to the celebrated Gobelin Room with its immersive tapestry. Outside, the gardens blend historical styles, including an 18th‑century crinkle‑crankle wall that adds a distinctive flourish to the landscape.
