Jacobikerk is one of Utrecht’s historic medieval parish churches, dedicated to St. James the Greater and long associated with the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. Founded in the 12th century, the church developed into its present Gothic form from the late 13th century onward, with major expansions in the 14th and 15th centuries that gave it the spacious hall‑church layout it retains today. Its tower, now a central feature of the structure, reflects centuries of architectural adaptation. The church played an unexpected role during the siege of Vredenburg Castle in 1576–1577, when a cannon was installed in its tower to support the city’s forces. After the Reformation, the Jacobikerk was formally handed over to the Protestant community in 1586, leading to the whitewashing of its medieval wall paintings and the removal of altarpieces. Despite these changes, the church remains a place of spiritual significance, especially for pilgrims who still begin their journey to Santiago from this site. Its blend of Gothic architecture, layered history, and enduring connection to centuries of travel and devotion makes the Jacobikerk a compelling landmark within Utrecht’s historic centre.
