Janskerk is one of Utrecht’s oldest surviving churches, founded shortly after 1040 by Bishop Bernold and dedicated to John the Baptist. Built as a Romanesque basilica of tuff stone, it originally formed part of the city’s medieval church cross, a constellation of five collegiate churches that shaped Utrecht’s spiritual and urban identity. Its massive columns, round‑arched windows, and the outline of the former Romanesque choir still evoke the grandeur of its early design. Over the centuries, the church underwent significant changes, including the later addition of a Gothic choir and the gradual transformation of its interior. Like many Utrecht churches, it experienced shifts in use after the Reformation, yet it remained a prominent landmark on the Janskerkhof. Today, Janskerk serves both as a place of worship and as a venue for cultural events, valued for its serene atmosphere, impressive acoustics, and thousand‑year history. Its setting on one of the city’s most historic squares reinforces its role as a quiet but enduring presence in Utrecht’s architectural landscape.
