The Stadhuis of Utrecht is a landmark where centuries of civic history and modern architecture meet. Standing beside the Oudegracht, it occupies a site used for city governance since 1343, when Utrecht’s councillors first met in the medieval houses that once stood here. Archaeological findings reveal even deeper roots, with structural remains dating back to around 806, making it one of the city’s oldest administrative locations. Over time the complex expanded and transformed, culminating in major redesigns in the early 19th century and again in 2000, when architect Enric Miralles introduced contemporary elements that blend seamlessly with the historic fabric. Today the Stadhuis serves as an open and welcoming civic centre where the municipal council meets, residents marry, and public life unfolds. Its mix of old and new reflects Utrecht’s identity: a city proud of its past yet continually evolving.
