St. Willibrord’s Church

St. Willibrord’s Church
About

St. Willibrord’s Church is one of Utrecht’s most remarkable neo‑Gothic monuments, hidden in a narrow street near the Dom but revealing an interior of extraordinary richness once you step inside. Completed in 1877 and designed by architect Alfred Tepe, the church was created in collaboration with the St. Bernulphus Guild, a movement dedicated to reviving medieval craftsmanship in Catholic architecture. Its soaring vaults, intricate woodcarvings by Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg, and vibrant stained‑glass windows by Heinrich Geuer give the space an almost theatrical intensity, making it one of the finest examples of 19th‑century Gothic Revival in the Netherlands. After being closed by the archdiocese in 1967, the building narrowly escaped demolition thanks to private intervention, eventually becoming a mission church operated by the Society of Saint Pius X. Today, St. Willibrord’s Church stands as a rare and beautifully preserved sanctuary where craftsmanship, colour, and devotion converge, offering visitors a powerful encounter with Utrecht’s Catholic heritage.
