De Inktpot is one of Utrecht’s most striking architectural landmarks, a monumental brick building completed in the early 1920s as the main administrative headquarters of the Dutch Railways. Its massive, square form and deep‑red masonry earned it the nickname “the Inkwell,” a reference to both its shape and its imposing presence. Designed by architect G.W. van Heukelom, the structure was built using more than twenty million bricks and reinforced with old railway tracks, reflecting the industrial ambition of the era. Today it serves as the headquarters of ProRail, but its cultural resonance extends beyond its function: the building is also known for the unexpected UFO sculpture placed on its tower during an art project in 2000, a playful contrast to its otherwise austere design. Standing beside Utrecht’s central station, De Inktpot remains the largest brick building in the Netherlands and a powerful example of early 20th‑century Dutch monumental architecture, blending solidity, craftsmanship, and a touch of modern whimsy.

De Inktpot is located at Moreelsepark 3, 3511 EP Utrecht, in the modern Moreelsepark area just east of the city centre. A mere five-minute walk from Utrecht Centraal Station, it stands near the Catharijnesingel canal with its revitalised walkways, the historic Oud-Katholieke Kerk St. Gertrudis, and the serene Willemsplantsoen park. The area offers quick access to Hoog Catharijne shopping centre, lively cafés along Catharijnesingel, and a short stroll to the Oudegracht canal's wharves and the Dom Tower.
