St. Martin’s Cathedral, known locally as the Domkerk, is Utrecht’s most iconic sacred landmark and a defining symbol of the city’s medieval past. Originally dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, the cathedral rose between the 13th and 16th centuries as the seat of the Diocese of Utrecht, built in the soaring Gothic style that still shapes its dramatic presence today. Once connected to the Dom Tower by a vast nave, the church was forever changed when a violent storm in 1674 destroyed the central section, leaving the tower and cathedral separated by the open square that now forms the Domplein. Despite this loss, the cathedral remains a living monument, celebrated for its elegant cloister garden, intricate stonework, and serene interior that reflects centuries of religious and cultural life.
