Cathedral of Assumption of Our Lady and St. John the Baptist

About

Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and St. John the Baptist in Kutná Hora is a landmark of early Baroque Gothic, a unique style born from the 18th‑century restoration of a medieval Cistercian basilica. Originally founded in the 12th century as part of the Sedlec Monastery, it became one of the most important religious centres in Bohemia. After the Hussite Wars left it in ruins, architect Jan Blažej Santini‑Aichel rebuilt it with his signature blend of Gothic verticality and Baroque dynamism, creating a structure found nowhere else in Europe. Inside, the cathedral impresses with its soaring nave and elegant vaulting shaped into Santini’s characteristic curved lines. The main altar features rich Baroque sculpture, while side chapels preserve fragments of medieval frescoes. One of the most fascinating elements is the restored organ loft, offering a glimpse into the monastery’s musical traditions. The upper gallery provides a rare elevated walkway with views over the nave and the surrounding Sedlec landscape.

Location

The Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and St. John the Baptist is located in the Sedlec district, about 1.6 kilometres north-east of Kutná Hora's historic centre. Otherwise known as the Sedlec Cathedral, it is the convent church of the former Cistercian monastery, the oldest in Bohemia, founded in 1142. It is a UNESCO World Heritage monument since 1995. The cathedral was built between 1290 and 1320 in High Gothic style, resembling French Gothic cathedrals, and was once the largest religious building in Bohemia and Moravia. After being destroyed by the Hussites in 1421 and left in ruins for nearly 300 years, it was restored by architect Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel in the early 18th century in a unique Baroque Gothic style, which includes unusual features like a self-supporting vault and staircase. The cathedral is directly across the street from the world-famous Sedlec Ossuary, also known as the "Bone Church," which is decorated with approximately 40,000 human bones arranged in artistic chandeliers and coats of arms. Both attractions are in the same UNESCO complex and can be visited together using a combination ticket. The Kutná Hora main train station is a short walk away, and local buses run from Masarykova Street to Sedlec. Other nearby sights include St. Barbara's Cathedral, the Italian Court, and the Stone House in the town centre.
