Kačina Chateau is one of the finest examples of Empire‑style architecture in the Czech lands, built in the early 19th century for the aristocratic Chotek family. Designed as a modern countryside residence inspired by classical ideals, it reflects the Enlightenment spirit of order, symmetry, and rational beauty. Its sweeping colonnades, rotunda library, and elegant white façade make it a standout among Central European noble estates. Inside, the highlight is the grand library, a circular hall lined with thousands of volumes that once formed one of the most important private collections in Bohemia. The theatre, preserved with original stage machinery, offers a rare glimpse into aristocratic entertainment of the period. Visitors can also explore richly furnished salons, the Chotek family dining room, and exhibitions on estate management, including early agricultural innovations. The surrounding English‑style park completes the experience with quiet paths and scenic views.
Kutná Hora Czech Republic
Kačina Chateau is located in Svatý Mikuláš, a small village about 6 kilometres northeast of Kutná Hora in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. The chateau stands on the edge of the village, surrounded by an extensive English-style landscaped park. It is easily accessible from Kutná Hora by bus (line 500, about 15 minutes), by bicycle, or by a pleasant 2-kilometre walk. Kačina is one of the few Empire-style buildings in the Czech Republic and one of the most important examples of this architectural style in Bohemia. Built in the early 19th century (1822–1841) for Jan Rudolf Chotek, the supreme Burgrave of the Kingdom of Bohemia, the snow-white chateau features an unusual bow-shaped ground plan that resembles a crescent moon. The interior includes a Roman-style library closed by a cupola like the Pantheon, a theatre, and elegant rooms decorated with period furniture, paintings, and tapestries. Nearby attractions include the UNESCO-listed historic centre of Kutná Hora, famous for St. Barbara's Cathedral, the Sedlec Ossuary (Bone Church), the Italian Court, and the Czech Museum of Silver. The Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and St. John the Baptist in Sedlec is also close by. Other local sights include the Baroque chateau and Dominican monastery in Nové Dvory, the viewing tower on Kaňk hill, and a micro-brewery in Hlízov. Kutná Hora is about 70 kilometres east of Prague, making Kačina a popular day-trip destination from both towns.
