Tyl Theatre

About

Tyl Theatre is Kutná Hora’s cultural heart, a graceful late‑19th‑century building named after playwright Josef Kajetán Tyl, author of the Czech national anthem. Opened in 1883, it reflects the optimism of a town reinventing itself after the decline of silver mining. Its façade blends neo‑Renaissance and neo‑Baroque elements, giving the theatre a dignified civic presence that still anchors the surrounding square. Inside, the auditorium preserves the charm of historic provincial theatres. The horseshoe layout, decorative stucco, and warm red‑and‑gold palette create an intimate atmosphere ideal for drama, concerts, and community events. The stage machinery, partly preserved from earlier decades, hints at the craftsmanship behind traditional theatre production. Exhibitions occasionally highlight Tyl’s legacy and the evolution of local performing arts, connecting visitors to the region’s cultural identity.

Location

The Tyl Theatre (Městské Tylovo divadlo) is located at Masarykova 128 in the heart of Kutná Hora's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 70 kilometres east of Prague. Named after Josef Kajetán Tyl, a native of Kutná Hora and the author of the Czech national anthem, the theatre stands prominently in the city's cultural district. The theatre operates without an in-house professional theatre group and serves as the cultural centre of the city. Its programme includes professional and amateur stage performances, concerts, dance programmes for children and adults, cyclical programmes, shows, competitions, festivals, and special events. The Tyl Amateur Theatre Company, which Tyl himself was once a member of, still uses the building for its activities today. Nearby attractions are all within easy walking distance. The famous St. Barbara's Cathedral is just a few hundred metres away. The Italian Court (former royal mint), the Czech Museum of Silver, the Gothic Stone Fountain, the Church of St. John of Nepomuk, the Plague Column, and the Three Kings House are all close by. The Sedlec Ossuary ("Bone Church") is about 1.5 kilometres away and can be reached by walking or local bus. The theatre also lies near the main square and the historic town centre, making it a perfect addition to any visit to Kutná Hora's UNESCO-listed sights.
