The Czech Museum of Silver in Kutná Hora offers one of the most immersive journeys into medieval mining in Central Europe. Housed in the historic Hrádek mansion, the museum traces the era when Kutná Hora’s silver deposits made it one of the richest cities of the Bohemian Kingdom. In the 14th century, its mines funded royal ambitions and helped establish the Prague groschen, one of Europe’s most stable currencies. Inside, the highlight is the authentic medieval mine tour. Visitors descend into narrow, dimly lit shafts wearing a miner’s cloak and helmet, experiencing the cramped conditions in which miners once worked. The exhibition showcases original tools, ore‑processing techniques, and the dangerous daily routines of medieval labourers. Above ground, the “City of Silver” displays present life in a wealthy mining town, including coin minting, trade, and the social hierarchy shaped by silver.
Kutná Hora Czech Republic
The Czech Museum of Silver is located in the historic centre of Kutná Hora, a UNESCO World Heritage town about 70 kilometres east of Prague. The museum’s main exhibition is housed in Hrádek, a Gothic fortress turned late Gothic palace on Barborská Street, and it also operates exhibitions in the Gothic Stone House and Tylův House in the town centre. Nearby attractions are all within easy walking distance in Kutná Hora’s compact historic centre. Just a few hundred metres from Hrádek is the stunning Cathedral of Saint Barbara, a UNESCO monument and masterpiece of Late Gothic architecture that was built for the town’s wealthy silver miners. The former royal mint and Italian Court (Vlašský dvůr), also a national cultural monument, is close by and played a key role in the town’s silver-processing history. The world-famous Sedlec Ossuary, known as the “Bone Church,” is located in the Sedlec district a short walk or bus ride from the centre and is decorated with approximately 40,000 human bones arranged in artistic chandeliers and coats of arms. Other nearby sights include the Gothic Stone House (which also houses parts of the museum), the Church of Saint James, the Church of Saint John of Nepomuk with its remarkable ceiling frescoes, the Sankturin House, the Gothic Stone Fountain, the Ursuline Convent, and GASK (Gallery of the Central Bohemian Region) near Saint Barbara’s Cathedral.
