Church of St. John of Nepomuk is one of Kutná Hora’s charming Baroque landmarks, standing quietly near the historic centre and reflecting the deep local devotion to the Czech patron saint of bridges and confession. Built in the early 18th century, the church replaced an older Gothic structure and became part of the town’s post‑medieval architectural renewal. Its elegant façade, with soft curves and decorative stucco, contrasts beautifully with the surrounding Gothic skyline. Inside, the church offers an intimate Baroque atmosphere. The main altar features a graceful statue of St. John of Nepomuk, easily recognised by his halo of five stars—a symbol tied to the legend of his martyrdom. Delicate stucco work frames the nave, while side altars display paintings of saints popular in the region. The light filtering through the modest windows creates a warm, contemplative mood, making the interior feel both simple and refined.
Kutná Hora Czech Republic
The Church of St. John of Nepomuk is located at Husova 120 on Husova Street in the historic centre of Kutná Hora, about 500 metres from the main square (Palacký Square). It is the only Baroque church in Kutná Hora and stands on the site of the former Dominican monastery, which was destroyed during the Hussite Wars in 1421. Built in the mid-18th century between 1734 and 1754, the church was designed by famous Baroque architects including F. M. Kaňka and partly by Kilian Ignác Dientzenhofer. Construction was completed in 1754. The church features a twin-towered façade that symbolises Charles Bridge, and the relief of five stars on the exterior represents an attribute of St. John of Nepomuk. Nearby attractions are all within easy walking distance. The Gothic Stone Fountain is just steps away, as is the Dačický House (birthplace of Renaissance writer Mikuláš Dačický). The Stone House and Czech Museum of Silver are a short walk away, along with the Plague column, the Ursuline Convent, the Sancturin House, and the Church of Saint James. The Italian Court and St. Barbara's Cathedral are also close by. The famous Sedlec Ossuary is about 1 kilometre away and can be reached by walking up Husova Street.
