St. Barbara's Church

About

St. Barbara’s Church is the architectural jewel of Kutná Hora, a soaring late‑Gothic masterpiece dedicated to the patron saint of miners. Begun in the 14th century and completed only in the early 20th, it reflects the city’s long rise and decline alongside its silver mines. Its dramatic silhouette, with three tent‑like roofs and flying buttresses, was designed to rival Prague’s great cathedrals, symbolising the pride and wealth of the local mining guilds. Inside, the church reveals a rich blend of Gothic and Baroque elements. The vaulted ceiling is decorated with unique frescoes depicting mining scenes, a rare tribute to the labour that built the city’s prosperity. The stained‑glass windows add vivid colour, while the Baroque choir stalls and altars introduce warm, sculptural detail. One of the most striking features is the long, elevated gallery offering sweeping views of the nave and its forest of slender columns.
