Archbishop's Palace Olomouc

About

The Archbishop’s Palace in Olomouc is one of the city’s most elegant landmarks, a place where political power and ecclesiastical prestige intertwined for centuries. Rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries, it gained its refined Baroque‑Classicist appearance after Empress Maria Theresa’s visit—an event that shaped its architectural character. Another remarkable moment in its history came in 1848, when Emperor Franz Joseph I was crowned here, making the palace a key site of Habsburg heritage. Inside, visitors can explore richly decorated ceremonial halls filled with stucco, gilded details, and period furnishings that reflect the lifestyle of Moravian archbishops. Portrait galleries, ornate salons, and historical documents reveal the palace’s role as both a residence and a centre of diplomacy. The Throne Hall, with its imperial symbolism, is among the most impressive spaces. Equally captivating are the collections of liturgical objects, fine glassware, and tapestries that illustrate the cultural wealth of the archdiocese. Guided tours offer insight into the daily life of the clergy, the palace’s political significance, and the evolution of its artistic style.

The Archbishop's Palace in Olomouc is located on Wurmova Street in the historic centre, just a short walk from the main square and the cathedral area. It is one of the most important early‑Baroque buildings in Moravia and has been the seat of the bishops, and since 1777 the archbishops, of Olomouc for centuries. The palace is right next to Saint Wenceslas Cathedral and close to the historic Olomouc Castle complex on Wenceslas Hill. The Archdiocesan Museum is also nearby, in buildings linked to the chapter deanery, making this a concentrated area of religious and cultural landmarks. Just a few minutes’ walk away is Horní náměstí, the main square, where you can see the Holy Trinity Column (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Town Hall, and the famous Astronomical Clock. The surrounding old town offers many Baroque buildings, churches, cafés, and the Theresa Gate, a well‑preserved city fortification.
