Church of Saint Michael in Olomouc is one of the city’s most atmospheric Baroque landmarks, instantly recognisable by its three towers—symbolising the Holy Trinity. Built in the 17th century on the site of an older Gothic church, it reflects the influence of the Dominican order, whose presence shaped its spiritual and architectural character. One fascinating detail is that the church’s interior was designed to create a sense of upward movement, guiding the visitor’s gaze toward light and ornament. Inside, the richly decorated nave is filled with dynamic stucco work, gilded details, and expressive frescoes that capture the drama of Baroque spirituality. The main altar, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, features powerful sculptural compositions depicting the triumph of good over evil. Side chapels contain finely carved altars, devotional paintings, and relics linked to the Dominican tradition.

The Church of Saint Michael is a large early‑Baroque parish church on Žerotínovo náměstí in the historic centre of Olomouc, on the city’s highest rocky hill. It was originally Gothic, consecrated in the mid‑13th century, and rebuilt into its current Baroque form in the late 17th century by architect G. P. Tencalla. Its three domes, symbolising the Holy Trinity, are one of the most distinctive features of the Olomouc skyline. The church stands on a hill overlooking the old town, so from here you already have good views over the city. Within a 5–10 minute walk downhill you reach the main square, Horní náměstí, where the Holy Trinity Column (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Town Hall, and the famous Astronomical Clock are located. Also nearby are the historic centre’s Baroque streets, cafés, and other important churches. The church of Saint Maurice (Svatý Mořic), another major landmark, is not far away, as are the historic university buildings and the area around the old castle. A short walk also leads to Saint Wenceslas Cathedral on Wenceslas Hill, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Archdiocesan Museum, including Zdík's Palace. The whole area is ideal for a walking tour that combines the Church of Saint Michael with Olomouc’s main sights.
