Olomouc Astronomical Clock is one of the city’s most unusual landmarks, a rare example of a medieval clock transformed by 20th‑century ideology. Originally built in the 15th century, it once resembled the famous Prague clock, with saints and religious symbolism. After heavy damage in World War II, it was rebuilt in a striking socialist‑realist style—making it one of the few astronomical clocks in the world decorated with workers, farmers, scientists, and athletes instead of traditional figures. The mosaic façade, created by artist Karel Svolinský, is a highlight in itself. It depicts the cycle of the year through scenes of everyday labour, blending folklore with political imagery. The clock’s mechanism shows not only time but also astronomical data: the position of the sun and moon, zodiac signs, and a calendar of name days. At noon, visitors can watch the brief procession of mechanical figures, a modern reinterpretation of the medieval tradition. Standing before the clock, you can read layers of history—Gothic origins, wartime destruction, and a bold post‑war redesign that turned it into a unique cultural curiosity.

The Olomouc Astronomical Clock is located on the north side of the Town Hall on Horní náměstí, the main square in the historic center of Olomouc, Czech Republic. It’s set into the facade of the building and faces the heart of the Old Town, so you can’t miss it while exploring the square. The clock sits in Horní náměstí, dominated by the UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column. Around the square you’ll find baroque fountains, including Caesar Fountain and Hercules Fountain, plus cafés with outdoor seating. Just steps away is Dolní náměstí with the Marian Column and more historic buildings. A short walk north takes you to St. Wenceslas Cathedral, the Archdiocesan Museum, and the Přemyslid Palace. West of the Town Hall, Bezruč Park offers green space and paths along Mlynský Potok for a quiet break. From the clock, you can easily reach the Museum of Modern Art, Archbishop’s Palace, and the old fortification walls. The location makes it the perfect starting point for a walking tour of Olomouc’s rich mix of baroque, gothic, and modern landmarks.
