Terezská brána is one of Olomouc’s most distinctive Baroque gateways, built in the mid‑18th century as part of the city’s extensive fortification system. Named after Empress Maria Theresa, it symbolised both imperial authority and the strategic importance of Olomouc as a military stronghold on the Habsburg frontier. Its most interesting feature is the richly decorated façade, where sculpted emblems, pilasters, and stone ornaments transform a defensive structure into an architectural statement. Inside the gate’s passage, you can still sense the atmosphere of the former fortress. The thick walls, vaulted ceilings, and narrow openings reveal how the gate once controlled movement into the fortified city. Exhibits and information panels explain the role of Olomouc’s bastions, ramparts, and gates during the Prussian siege of 1758, when the city successfully resisted one of the most powerful armies of the era.

Terezská brána (Theresian Gate) is a baroque‑classicist triumphal arch on Palachovo náměstí in the centre of Olomouc, near Tátr Svobody street and the main pedestrian zone. It is the last surviving gate of Olomouc’s former fortified system and has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. The gate stands just a few minutes’ walk from Horní náměstí, the main square, where you can see the Holy Trinity Column (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000), the Town Hall, and the famous Astronomical Clock. Around Terezská brána you will also find the historic Jewish quarter, where the former synagogue once stood and where several Jewish monuments are located. The Theresian Hotel & Spa is right next to the gate, and the city’s main touring area, including Saint Wenceslas Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Archdiocesan Museum, is within a short walk. For families, the modern aquapark and swimming stadium in the centre are popular options, and the Veteran Arena (museum of historic cars) is also nearby.
