Smetana Park is one of Olomouc’s most elegant green spaces, created in the late 19th century as part of the city’s transformation from a fortified stronghold into a modern urban centre. Its most interesting feature is how it follows the line of the former city walls, turning old military grounds into a peaceful promenade filled with mature trees, winding paths, and historic atmosphere. The park is known for its impressive collection of statues and memorials, including works by prominent Moravian sculptors that reflect the cultural pride of the era. Seasonal flowerbeds and carefully designed landscaping give the park a refined, almost classical character. The long alleys of linden and chestnut trees create natural corridors perfect for quiet walks. Smetana Park (Smetanovy sady) is a historic public park on the western edge of Olomouc’s old town, founded in 1820 between the Theresian Gate and the Catherine Gate along the former city fortress line. It was laid out on land that once belonged to the fortifications and is now a green, tree‑lined area in the heart of the city. The park is directly linked to the city’s fortification heritage. Just a short walk away is Terezská brána (Theresian Gate), the last surviving baroque gate of Olomouc’s former fortified system, located on Palachovo náměstí. The Catherine Gate, another historic part of the old fortifications, is also close by. From Smetana Park you can easily walk into the main historic centre. Within a few minutes you reach Horní náměstí, the main square, with the Holy Trinity Column (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Town Hall, and the famous Astronomical Clock. The historic Jewish monuments on Palachovo náměstí, the Moravian Theatre on Horní náměstí, and the long painted walkway of the Lomená gallery are all nearby.
