Saint Wenceslas Cathedral is the spiritual heart of Olomouc, rising above Wenceslas Hill with three towers that define the city’s skyline. Its most striking feature is the 100.65‑metre southern tower, the second‑tallest church tower in the Czech Republic. The cathedral’s history stretches back to the 12th century, though its current Neo‑Gothic appearance comes from a major 19th‑century reconstruction that blended medieval foundations with dramatic vertical lines and ornate stonework. Inside, the cathedral reveals layers of history. The Romanesque crypt, one of its oldest surviving parts, offers a quiet glimpse into the early Přemyslid era. The Gothic choir is filled with light filtering through colourful stained glass, while the Baroque chapels display richly decorated altars and sculptures. A notable highlight is the Chapel of St. John Sarkander, dedicated to the local martyr whose story is closely tied to the city’s religious identity.

Saint Wenceslas Cathedral is a large Gothic cathedral on Wenceslas Square in the historic centre of Olomouc, on Wenceslas Hill. It was founded in 1107 and rebuilt in Gothic style from the 12th century onward, with striking neo‑Gothic spires that are the tallest church spires in Moravia. The cathedral is at the heart of the old Olomouc Castle complex. Right next to it stands the Romanesque Bishop's Palace, also known as Zdík's Palace, which is now part of the Archdiocesan Museum and features rare Romanesque windows and a Gothic cloister with late‑15th‑century frescoes. Also nearby are the Archbishop's Palace on Wurmova Street, the historic chapter buildings, and Palacký University Olomouc. A short walk downhill leads to Horní náměstí, the main square, where you can see the Holy Trinity Column (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Town Hall, and the famous Astronomical Clock. The surrounding old town offers many Baroque buildings, churches, cafés, and the Theresa Gate, making the cathedral area a perfect starting point for a cultural walking tour of Olomouc.
