ZOO Olomouc is one of the most scenic zoological parks in the Czech Republic, set on the wooded slopes of Svatý Kopeček with views stretching across the entire Olomouc basin. Its most interesting feature is the tall observation tower, offering a panorama that makes the zoo visit feel both natural and adventurous. Founded in 1956, the zoo has grown into a modern institution focused on conservation, education, and immersive habitats. Inside, visitors can explore a wide range of themed areas. The African section features giraffes, zebras, and antelopes in spacious enclosures, while the Asian zone highlights rare species such as Amur tigers and red pandas. One of the zoo’s most popular attractions is the large marine aquarium, where sharks and colourful reef fish glide through illuminated tanks. The bat cave and nocturnal exhibits offer a glimpse into the hidden world of night‑active animals. A highlight for families is the safari‑style enclosure with free‑roaming animals and the walk‑through aviaries filled with exotic birds. ZOO Olomouc is located on Svatý Kopeček, a wooded hill northeast of Olomouc, Czech Republic. The zoo sits within a large natural forest about 10 km from the city center, making it feel like a mix of wildlife park and nature reserve. Regular city buses run to Svatý Kopeček, and there’s parking for visitors arriving by car. Right next to the zoo is the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on Svatý Kopeček, a major baroque pilgrimage site with stunning interiors and panoramic views over Olomouc. The terrace in front of the basilica is a favorite photo spot. The area also has restaurants, cafés, and stalls selling traditional Olomoucké tvarůžky cheese and local sweets. You can walk the forest trails around the hill or visit Fort Radíkov, part of Olomouc’s 19th-century fortification system, just a short hike away. From Svatý Kopeček, Olomouc’s city center is an easy trip by bus or car. There you’ll find the UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column, the Astronomical Clock, St. Wenceslas Cathedral, and Bezruč Park. ZOO Olomouc pairs well with a day of history and culture in the city, offering a nature break with a view.
