The Archdiocesan Museum Olomouc is the first museum of its kind in the Czech Republic, dedicated entirely to the spiritual and artistic heritage of Moravia. Located within the Přemyslid Palace—one of the oldest surviving palace structures in Central Europe—it offers a rare chance to walk through rooms once used by medieval rulers and bishops. The preserved Romanesque hall, with its elegant arcades, is one of the museum’s most striking features. Inside, the collection spans a thousand years of sacred art. Visitors can admire Gothic panel paintings, intricately carved Baroque sculptures, illuminated manuscripts, and liturgical treasures that reveal the region’s deep religious traditions. Among the highlights is the famous Kroměříž Madonna, a masterpiece of medieval painting, and a remarkable set of goldsmith works linked to the Olomouc archbishopric. The museum also presents archaeological finds from the palace complex, offering insight into early medieval life. Temporary exhibitions often explore themes such as spirituality in contemporary art or the cultural role of the Church in Moravia.

Location

The Archdiocesan Museum Olomouc is situated on Wenceslas Square in the historic centre of the city, in restored buildings of the chapter deanery. The museum is closely linked to the nearby cathedral and the old castle area, so it is easy to include in a walking tour of Olomouc’s most important cultural sites. Near the museum, visitors can see Saint Wenceslas Cathedral, one of the city’s main landmarks, and the Romanesque Bishops’ Palace at the Olomouc Přemyslid Castle. A short walk away leads to Horní náměstí, the main square, with the Holy Trinity Column, the Town Hall, and the famous Astronomical Clock. The Archbishop’s Palace and several other historic churches are also close by, making the area around the museum a rich and convenient place for tourists interested in history, art, and architecture.
