The Science and Technology Centre Ostrava is a dynamic world of discovery built on the grounds of the former Lower Vítkovice industrial complex, where blast furnaces once shaped the city’s skyline. Today, the centre transforms this industrial heritage into an interactive universe of physics, chemistry, robotics, and natural sciences. Visitors can experiment with real‑world phenomena, from controlling robotic arms to exploring the principles of magnetism, optics, and energy. One of the most fascinating features is the giant rotating globe that visualises climate systems and global processes in real time. The centre also includes a hands‑on chemistry lab where guests can safely perform colourful reactions under expert supervision. Exhibits dedicated to mining and metallurgy connect science with Ostrava’s past, showing how technology evolved from heavy industry to modern innovation. With its blend of playful learning and striking industrial surroundings, the centre offers an inspiring experience for all ages.
Ostrava Czech Republic
The Science and Technology Centre in Ostrava, also known as Svět Techniky, is located in the historic industrial complex of Dolní Vítkovice in the Vítkovice district of southern Ostrava, at Vítkovice 3004. It is housed in a modern building designed by architect Josef Pleskot, set within the revitalized former coal mine, coke ovens, and blast furnaces of Vítkovice Ironworks. The centre is easily reached by tram lines 1, 2, or 10 from the main train station, getting off at “Důl Hlubina” or “Vítkovice – Dolní oblast”, and there is free on-site parking for drivers. The centre features two main exhibition buildings – the main Science and Technology Centre and U6 – with over 100 interactive exhibits that explore chemistry, physics, biology, and many scientific disciplines in a fun, hands-on way. It includes Kids’ World, a 950 m² area for children aged 2–6 where they can explore a miniature adult world with a patisserie, shop, mine, and building site. The centre is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, and is closed on Mondays except for certain holidays and summer periods. Nearby attractions within Dolní Vítkovice include the Bolt Tower, an 80-metre-high viewing platform on top of Blast Furnace No. 1 offering panoramic views of the city, and the Hlubina Cultural District, a former mine complex with a climbing wall, cafés, workshops, and studios.
