Silesian Ostrava Castle is one of the city’s oldest landmarks, rising above the confluence of the Ostravice and Lučina rivers. Originally built in the 13th century to guard the borderlands of Silesia, it later sank by several metres due to mining‑related subsidence, a dramatic reminder of Ostrava’s industrial past. Today the restored complex blends medieval atmosphere with modern exhibitions. Inside, visitors can explore reconstructed castle rooms, archaeological finds, and displays on the region’s turbulent history, including the era of Hussite wars and the castle’s later Baroque transformation. A popular highlight is the interactive torture‑chamber exhibition, offering insight into historical justice practices. The tower provides sweeping views of the city’s industrial skyline, while seasonal events—such as medieval festivals and night tours—bring the fortress to life. Compact yet full of character, Silesian Ostrava Castle offers a vivid journey through centuries of borderland history.

Silesian Ostrava Castle is a historic castle in the Slezská Ostrava district of Ostrava, in the northeast of the Czech Republic. It stands on a small hill near the confluence of the Ostravice and Lučina rivers, close to the city center and easy to include in a walking route through Ostrava. The castle is a good stop for visitors who like history, architecture, and scenic views. Inside, you can find exhibitions, a lookout tower, and often cultural events, which makes it more than just a ruined fortress. Nearby, several interesting places are worth seeing. Černá Louka exhibition grounds are close by, and from there you can walk to the castle along the river. In the wider area, Ostrava also offers the Cathedral of the Divine Savior, the Old Town Hall square, the Antonín Dvořák Theatre, Landek Park Mining Museum, the New City Hall Viewing Tower, and the Dolní Vítkovice industrial area. This makes the castle a nice starting point for exploring both the historical and industrial sides of the city.
