Silesian Ostrava Castle

About

Silesian Ostrava Castle is one of the city’s oldest landmarks, rising above the confluence of the Ostravice and Lučina rivers. Originally built in the 13th century to guard the borderlands of Silesia, it later sank by several metres due to mining‑related subsidence, a dramatic reminder of Ostrava’s industrial past. Today the restored complex blends medieval atmosphere with modern exhibitions. Inside, visitors can explore reconstructed castle rooms, archaeological finds, and displays on the region’s turbulent history, including the era of Hussite wars and the castle’s later Baroque transformation. A popular highlight is the interactive torture‑chamber exhibition, offering insight into historical justice practices. The tower provides sweeping views of the city’s industrial skyline, while seasonal events—such as medieval festivals and night tours—bring the fortress to life. Compact yet full of character, Silesian Ostrava Castle offers a vivid journey through centuries of borderland history.
