New City Hall Observation Tower

About

New City Hall Observation Tower is one of Ostrava’s defining landmarks, offering the best panoramic view of the city’s industrial and urban landscape. Completed in 1930, the building was once the largest town hall in Czechoslovakia, and its 85‑metre tower quickly became a symbol of modern Ostrava. An interesting fact is that the tower’s steel structure was produced by the city’s own ironworks, making it a true product of local industry. Inside, visitors ascend by a glass lift that reveals the tower’s internal framework before reaching the observation deck at 73 metres. From here, you can see the Lower Vítkovice industrial complex, the Beskydy Mountains, and the winding Ostravice River. The viewing platform includes orientation panels that help identify major landmarks. The interior of the town hall itself features elegant functionalist design, historic meeting rooms, and a grand entrance hall decorated with reliefs celebrating Ostrava’s mining heritage. The tower remains a perfect introduction to the city’s character.

Location

The New City Hall Observation Tower is in Moravská Ostrava, on Prokešovo náměstí, just outside the old town and close to the city center. It is one of the best places in Ostrava for panoramic views, with the viewing terrace set high above the city and easy access by lift. From the tower, you can see not only Ostrava itself but also the surrounding landscape, including the Beskydy Mountains on clear days. The building is a convenient starting point for sightseeing because it sits within walking distance of the historic core. Nearby, Masaryk Square, the Church of St. Wenceslas, and the Cathedral of the Divine Saviour are all easy to reach on foot. You can also combine the visit with the Old Town Hall area and nearby city-center streets for cafés, shops, and architecture. If you want to continue sightseeing after the tower, Dolní Vítkovice is one of Ostrava’s top attractions and a strong contrast to the historic center. The tower is therefore a great place to begin a route that mixes city views, heritage buildings, and the industrial character of Ostrava.
