The Cathedral of the Divine Saviour is Ostrava’s largest church and one of the most striking neo‑Renaissance buildings in the region. Completed in 1889, it was financed largely by local industrialists who wanted to give the rapidly growing mining city a monumental spiritual centre. Its twin towers rise above the cityscape, and the interior surprises visitors with its warm, elegant proportions rather than heavy ornamentation. Inside, the main attraction is the richly decorated altar with a painting of the Transfiguration, complemented by side chapels honouring local saints. The cathedral’s organ—one of the biggest in Moravia—adds a powerful acoustic dimension during concerts and liturgical events. Visitors can also admire original stained‑glass windows depicting biblical scenes and the beautifully restored pulpit carved with symbolic motifs. Despite its size, the cathedral maintains an intimate, serene atmosphere, offering a quiet counterpoint to Ostrava’s industrial energy.

Location

The Cathedral of the Divine Saviour is in the center of Ostrava, on náměstí Msgre Šrámka in Moravská Ostrava. It is the second largest Roman Catholic cathedral in Moravia and Silesia, and one of the main landmarks in the city. Its location makes it easy to combine with a walk through Ostrava’s historic center. Nearby, you can see the Old Town Hall area, the main square, and the Antonín Dvořák Theatre, all of which are close enough for a short sightseeing route. For more attractions, the New Town Hall Viewing Tower offers wide city views, while Silesian Ostrava Castle gives a more historic and scenic stop on the other side of the river. If you are interested in industrial heritage, Dolní Vítkovice is another major place to visit in Ostrava and shows a very different side of the city.
