Landek Park Mining Museum

About

Landek Park Mining Museum in Ostrava offers one of the most authentic mining experiences in Central Europe, set on a site where coal was extracted for centuries. The museum’s highlight is the descent into original mine corridors, where visitors can walk through dimly lit tunnels, see preserved machinery, and feel the atmosphere of real underground work. Former miners guide many tours, adding personal stories that bring the harsh conditions and camaraderie of the profession to life. Above ground, the rescue station exhibition is particularly fascinating—it is the oldest of its kind in the world, showcasing historic breathing apparatus, training chambers, and dramatic accounts of mine‑rescue operations. Large outdoor displays feature locomotives, mining equipment, and towering machinery that once powered the region’s industrial boom. Landek Park blends history, technology, and human experience, offering a vivid look at the industry that shaped Ostrava’s identity.

Location

Landek Park Mining Museum is located at Pod Landekem 64 in the Ostrava-Petřkovice district, near Petřkovice, on the historic Landek hill. It is the largest mining museum in the Czech Republic and is built into the red brick buildings of the old Anselm Mine, the oldest black coal mine in the Ostrava region. The museum sits in a unique combination of a technical monument and a national natural monument, with 35 hectares of area that includes a sports and recreation zone, mining pub, tennis courts, and pétanque fields. Visitors can descend 9 metres underground into 250 metres of historical mine drifts via the original mine cage, exploring the Albert and František coal seams while guided by experienced ex-miners. Nearby attractions include the site where the Petřkovice Venus figurine was discovered, a unique Paleolithic artefact left by mammoth hunters 25,000 years ago, and a viewpoint overlooking Ostrava from a wooden lookout tower on the former Slavic settlement site. The area also features natural outcrops of coal seams where narrow black strips of coal come to the surface from the rock. From Landek Park, bus lines 34, 52, 56, 67, and 68 connect you to central Ostrava, where you can visit Dolní Vítkovice industrial heritage site, the New City Hall viewing tower, Silesian Ostrava Castle, or the famous Ostrava Zoo.
