Firefighting Museum Ostrava

About

The Firefighting Museum Ostrava offers a vivid look at how fire protection evolved from simple manual tools to modern rescue technology. Located in a former fire station, it preserves the authentic atmosphere of a place where alarms once rang and crews rushed into action. Inside, visitors can explore historic fire engines, from elegant horse‑drawn carriages to early motorised trucks that served the city throughout the 20th century. One of the most interesting exhibits is the collection of breathing apparatus and protective gear, showing how firefighters adapted to increasingly dangerous environments. Detailed models and archival photographs reveal major fires that shaped Ostrava’s history, while interactive stations allow guests to try basic firefighting techniques in a safe, educational way. The museum also highlights the work of volunteer brigades, whose dedication played a crucial role in local communities. It’s an engaging, hands‑on tribute to courage, teamwork, and technical progress.

Location

The Firefighting Museum, known as Hasičské muzeum města Ostravy, is located in the Ostrava-Přívoz district. It occupies a beautiful Art Nouveau building from 1905 that originally served as headquarters for the German volunteer fire brigade, later used by Czech volunteer firefighters and the city’s fire protection services. Opened as a museum in 2005, it is operated by the Moravian-Silesian professional firefighters and offers a comprehensive look at the history and future of firefighting in the region. Inside, the exposition is divided into several parts covering fire prevention, rescue work, and the cooperation of the integrated rescue system. Visitors can explore a wide array of artifacts including historical uniforms, die-cast fire trucks, horse-drawn pumps, and retired fire engines. Model situations and demonstrations show rescue work at height and modern techniques, while displays and panels detail the activities of firefighter units. English translations are available and knowledgeable staff can provide guided tours. From Přívoz you’re close to many of Ostrava’s highlights. The city centre around Masaryk Square features the Ostrava Museum in the Old Town Hall with its city history collections and indoor astronomical clock, along with Baroque buildings, cafés, and the statue of St Florian, patron saint of firefighters.
