Antonín Dvořák Theatre

About

Antonín Dvořák Theatre is one of Ostrava’s most elegant cultural landmarks, opened in 1907 as the city’s first purpose‑built theatre. Designed in a refined neo‑Renaissance style, it quickly became the artistic heart of the growing industrial metropolis. Its name honours the famous Czech composer, who maintained strong ties to the region’s musical life. Inside, the theatre impresses with a richly decorated auditorium featuring gilded stucco, crystal chandeliers, and a painted ceiling that evokes the world of opera and drama. The horseshoe layout ensures excellent acoustics and an intimate connection between performers and audience. Visitors can explore the foyer with its marble columns and historic photographs documenting more than a century of productions. The theatre is home to opera, ballet, and drama ensembles, making it one of the most versatile stages in Moravia. Despite its grandeur, it retains a welcoming atmosphere, blending tradition with a lively contemporary programme.
