Natural History Museum of the University of Zurich

About

The Natural History Museum of the University of Zürich offers a vivid journey through the evolution of life, geology, and biodiversity, shaped by more than 250 years of scientific collecting. Its origins lie in the university’s early cabinets of curiosities, which grew into one of Switzerland’s most important academic natural history collections. Today, the museum combines classic displays with modern interpretation, making it both educational and atmospheric. Inside, visitors encounter impressive zoological exhibits, including meticulously preserved mammals, birds, and reptiles that illustrate global diversity. The mineral and rock collection is another highlight, featuring sparkling crystals, meteorites, and rare Alpine specimens that reveal the geological richness of Switzerland. Fossils — from ancient marine creatures to Ice Age mammals — trace the deep history of life, while interactive stations explain evolution, ecosystems, and environmental change. A particularly engaging feature is the museum’s focus on research: many displays connect directly to current scientific work at the university, offering insights into genetics, species conservation, and climate studies. Compact yet rich in detail, the museum provides a thoughtful, academically grounded look at the natural world.

Location

The Natural History Museum of the University of Zürich is located at Karl-Schmid-Strasse 4, inside the university’s main building in Zürich’s university district. It sits on the eastern edge of the city center, up the hill from the Old Town. You’re in the heart of Zürich’s university quarter. Right next door is the main building of ETH Zürich, with its historic terrace offering panoramic views over the Old Town, Limmat River, and lake. The terrace is a favorite photo spot, especially at sunset. A 5-minute downhill walk brings you to Niederdorf, the lively part of Old Town. Here you’ll find cobbled streets, bookshops, cafés, and landmarks like Grossmünster church with its twin towers. Nearby Predigerkirche and the Zentralbibliothek add to the historic atmosphere. From Niederdorf, cross the river to reach Lindenhof, a quiet hilltop park with Roman roots and great city views. Fraumünster, known for its Chagall stained-glass windows, is also within walking distance. For more museums, the Kunsthaus Zürich is 10 minutes away and houses major Swiss and international art. If you head down to Central and take a tram, you’ll reach Lake Zürich and Bürkliplatz in minutes. The Polybahn funicular beside the university is a fun, quick ride down to the riverside.
