Cabaret Voltaire is the birthplace of Dada, the radical art movement that erupted in 1916 as a response to the chaos of the First World War. In this small, unassuming building in Zürich’s Niederdorf, Hugo Ball, Emmy Hennings, Tristan Tzara, and other avant‑garde artists staged chaotic performances that challenged every artistic rule of their time. Today, the space preserves that spirit of rebellion and experimentation. Inside, you’ll find a blend of historic atmosphere and contemporary creativity. The ground‑floor café is decorated with Dadaist motifs, echoing the original bohemian gatherings. The exhibition rooms upstairs host rotating shows on experimental art, performance, and political expression, often featuring emerging international artists. Archival materials—photographs, manifestos, and early publications—offer a glimpse into the movement’s explosive beginnings. Cabaret Voltaire is located at Spiegelgasse 1 in Zürich’s old town, in the historic Rathaus area near the Limmat River.
