Irchelpark is one of Zürich’s most spacious and tranquil green areas, designed in the late 1970s as a landscape park surrounding the University of Zürich’s Irchel campus. Its gently rolling terrain, ponds, and meadows create a naturalistic environment that feels far removed from the city, even though it sits just minutes from central Zürich. The park was conceived as a fusion of recreation, ecology, and education, making it a favourite for students, families, and walkers. Inside the park, a network of paths leads past wetlands, wooded areas, and open lawns. The ponds are among its most charming features, attracting ducks, herons, and turtles, and offering peaceful reflections of the surrounding trees. Sculptures and small architectural elements appear along the way, adding subtle cultural touches to the landscape. One of the most interesting aspects is the park’s ecological design. Native plants were prioritised, and several zones are intentionally left wild to support biodiversity. Seasonal changes are particularly striking: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and vivid colours in autumn.

Irchelpark is a spacious, landscaped park in northern Zürich, set on the Irchel campus of the University of Zurich in the Unterstrass–Oberstrass area. You reach it easily in about 15 minutes from Zürich Hauptbahnhof by tram, making it a green escape that still feels connected to the city center. Locals and students come here to jog, picnic, read, or just enjoy views that stretch across Zürich toward the lake and, on clear days, the Alps. Staying near Irchelpark puts you within a short ride of many of Zürich’s main attractions. The University of Zurich Irchel Campus itself sits right in the park and houses the Anthropological Museum. From there it’s a quick tram ride to the Swiss National Museum by the main station, where Switzerland’s cultural history is on display in a castle-like building. Art lovers can head to Kunsthaus Zürich, the city’s premier art museum with works from the Middle Ages to contemporary pieces, also just a few stops away. For families, Zurich Zoo on the Zürichberg is about 15 minutes by public transport and is known for its Masoala Rainforest Hall and elephant park. If you prefer city strolls, Old Town is close: wander the medieval lanes of Niederdorf, see Grossmünster and Fraumünster Churches, and walk the Limmat River promenades. The Zurich Botanical Garden at the university’s other campus offers domed tropical houses and is another easy trip.
