Grossmünster

About

Grossmünster is Zürich’s most iconic church, instantly recognisable by its twin towers rising above the Limmat. According to legend, it was founded by Charlemagne after his horse knelt at the graves of Zürich’s patron saints, Felix and Regula. Historically, it became the centre of the Swiss Reformation: Huldrych Zwingli preached here from 1519, transforming the church into a cradle of religious change that shaped the city’s identity. Inside, the atmosphere is strikingly austere, reflecting Reformation ideals. The Romanesque nave, with its massive pillars and clean lines, creates a sense of clarity and calm. One of the highlights is the set of modern stained‑glass windows by Augusto Giacometti, whose deep colours contrast beautifully with the stone interior. The crypt, one of the oldest parts of the building, preserves medieval carvings and offers a glimpse into the church’s early centuries.

Grossmünster is located in the heart of Zürich’s Old Town on Grossmünsterplatz, close to the Limmat River. It is one of the city’s best-known landmarks, famous for its twin towers and its important place in Zürich’s religious and cultural history. The area around the church is ideal for sightseeing. Nearby, you can visit the Fraumünster Church, the Wasserkirche, and the charming streets of the Old Town, all within a short walking distance. The Limmatquai riverfront, Rathaus area, and Münsterbrücke also add to the atmosphere, while the view from the church towers gives a wide panorama over the city, the lake, and the Alps.
