focusTerra, the Earth and science centre of ETH Zürich, offers an engaging journey into the forces that shape our planet. Located in a modern underground space beneath the university’s main building, it was designed to bring geology, seismology, and natural phenomena to life through hands‑on learning. Its most famous feature is the large earthquake simulator, which lets visitors experience the shaking intensity of historic quakes — a rare and unforgettable educational tool. Inside, the exhibitions explore Earth’s structure, minerals, volcanoes, and tectonic processes with a mix of real specimens and interactive models. The mineral collection is a highlight, showcasing sparkling crystals, meteorites, and rare geological formations that reveal the planet’s deep history. Multimedia displays explain how mountains rise, how rocks transform, and how scientists monitor seismic activity in Switzerland and around the world. Temporary exhibitions often connect Earth science with everyday life, from climate change to resource use. Location

focusTerra is the Earth & Science Discovery Center of ETH Zurich. You’ll find it on the ETH main campus at Sonneggstrasse 5, inside the historic NO building. It sits in Zürich’s university district on the hillside above the city center, about a 10-minute walk uphill from Central or a short ride on the Polybahn funicular. You’re in the heart of Zürich’s knowledge quarter. Right next door is the main ETH building with its grand dome and terrace offering one of the best panoramic views over Old Town, the Limmat River, and the Alps on clear days. Take the Polybahn down to Central and you’re instantly in Niederdorf, the oldest part of Zürich. Wander cobbled lanes to see Grossmünster’s twin towers, Fraumünster’s Chagall windows, and St. Peter’s church with Europe’s largest clock face. Lindenhof hill is a quiet park with Roman roots and great city views. From Central it’s also a 7-minute walk to Zürich Hauptbahnhof and the Swiss National Museum, which looks like a fairytale castle and covers Swiss cultural history. Head south along the Limmat to reach Lake Zürich and Bürkliplatz for boat cruises and lakeside promenades.
