Fraumünster Church

Fraumünster is one of Zürich’s most atmospheric landmarks, founded in 853 as a convent for aristocratic women and once ruled by powerful abbesses who shaped the city’s early political life. Its name—“Women’s Minster”—reflects this remarkable female legacy, which sets it apart from other medieval churches in Switzerland. Inside, the church is defined by a serene blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, with tall, slender columns and soft light filtering through world‑famous stained‑glass windows. The most celebrated are Marc Chagall’s five choir windows from 1970, glowing with deep blues, greens, and reds that depict biblical scenes in his lyrical, dreamlike style. Nearby, Augusto Giacometti’s large north‑transept window bathes the space in warm, golden tones. The crypt reveals traces of the original 9th‑century foundations, offering a quiet reminder of the church’s monastic origins. Visitors also appreciate the calm, uncluttered interior—an ideal setting to contemplate the interplay of colour, light, and centuries of history.

Fraumünster Church is located in the heart of Zürich’s Old Town, on Münsterhof 2, on the west bank of the Limmat River. It is one of the city’s most recognizable churches, known especially for its elegant green steeple and the famous stained glass windows by Marc Chagall. Its location makes it easy to combine with several major sights nearby. Just across or along the river are the Grossmünster and the picturesque Limmatquai, while the Rathaus and the medieval streets of the Old Town are only a short walk away.
