St. Peter is the oldest parish church in Zürich and one of its most recognisable landmarks, famous for having the largest church clock face in Europe. Its 8.7‑metre‑wide dial dominates the skyline and has kept time for the city since the early 16th century. The church itself dates back to the early Middle Ages, with foundations from the 9th century still visible in parts of the structure. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and understated, shaped by a blend of Romanesque and later Baroque elements. The wooden ceiling and soft light create a sense of intimacy unusual for a major city church. One of the most interesting features is the beautifully carved 17th‑century pulpit, a reminder of the church’s role during the Reformation, when sermons became central to worship. Visitors can also see remnants of medieval frescoes and explore the choir area, where elegant stucco work adds a refined touch. The tower, once used as a fire‑watch post, still carries traces of its civic function, symbolising the close link between church and city life.

St. Peter is located in Zürich’s Old Town at St. Peterhofstatt, just a short walk from the Limmat River and the city centre. It is one of the oldest churches in the city and is especially known for its large clock face, which is one of the biggest in Europe. The area around St. Peter is excellent for sightseeing. Nearby, you can visit the Grossmünster and Fraumünster Churches, both of which are among Zürich’s most famous landmarks. The narrow streets of the Old Town, the Rathaus, and the riverside promenade along the Limmat are also close by, making this one of the best places in Zürich for a walking tour.
