Medieval City of Rhodes and Fortifications

About

The Medieval City of Rhodes is one of Europe’s best‑preserved fortified towns, a UNESCO World Heritage site where every street feels like a chapter of history. Built and expanded by the Knights Hospitaller between the 14th and 16th centuries, its fortifications formed one of the most sophisticated defensive systems of the medieval world. Massive walls, angled bastions and deep moats were engineered to withstand artillery—an innovation that made Rhodes a model fortress of its time. Inside the walls, visitors can wander through the Street of the Knights, lined with the inns of the various Langues, each bearing carved coats of arms. The fortifications themselves are a highlight: the Gate of Amboise with its powerful towers, the d’Amboise Bastion, and the vast dry moat that encircles the city like a stone canyon. Walking along the ramparts reveals hidden passages, artillery platforms and panoramic views of the harbour. One of the most interesting features is the layered construction. Venetian, Ottoman and later Italian modifications coexist with the original Hospitaller design, creating a living architectural palimpsest. The Auvergne Bastion and Spain Gate show how the Knights adapted their walls after the 1480 siege, reinforcing weak points with new angles and thicker masonry.
