Acropolis of Rhodes

About

The Acropolis of Rhodes crowns Monte Smith with sweeping views over the Aegean, offering a striking contrast to the medieval city below. Unlike the fortified acropolis of Lindos, this site reflects the classical spirit of ancient Rhodes, flourishing between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC when the island was a major cultural and political power. Its layout once formed part of a grand urban plan, with temples, public buildings and a stadium arranged along terraces overlooking the sea. The most iconic structure is the Temple of Apollo, partially restored with elegant Doric columns that hint at its former grandeur. Nearby stands the ancient stadium, remarkably preserved, where athletic competitions of the Hellenistic period took place. Its long track, stone seating and arched entrance create an evocative sense of ancient sporting life. Adjacent is the odeon, a small marble theatre used for musical performances and civic gatherings. One of the most interesting aspects of the Acropolis is how it reveals Rhodes’ intellectual legacy. The city was known for its schools of philosophy and rhetoric, and the monuments here reflect a society deeply invested in culture and civic pride. Walking among the ruins, visitors can trace the outlines of porticoes, sanctuaries and public spaces that once formed a vibrant classical centre.
