Fort of Saint Nicholas stands guard at the entrance of Mandraki Harbour, a compact yet powerful symbol of Rhodes’ maritime strength. Built by the Knights Hospitaller in the mid‑15th century, it was the island’s first line of defence against Ottoman naval attacks. Its circular shape—unusual for medieval fortifications—was designed to better absorb cannon fire, making it one of the most advanced coastal forts of its time. Inside, visitors can explore the gun platforms and thick stone corridors that once housed artillery crews. The fort’s most striking feature is the lighthouse, added during the Ottoman period and still functioning today. Its presence gives the fort a distinctive silhouette, especially at sunset when the tower glows above the sea. The interior retains a raw, authentic feel: vaulted chambers, narrow stairways and weathered battlements reveal centuries of military use. From the upper level, the view across Mandraki Harbour is exceptional—you can see the three medieval windmills and the spot traditionally associated with the Colossus of Rhodes.
Rhodes Greece
The Fort of Saint Nicholas stands at the end of the long breakwater that protects Mandraki Harbour in Rhodes Town, Greece. The address is simply the pier of Mandraki Harbour, Rhodes 85100. This 15th-century fort was built by the Knights to guard the entrance to the harbour and still serves as a working lighthouse. You reach it by walking out along the breakwater, a pleasant stroll that offers open views back towards the town and the sea. The fort itself is mainly appreciated from the outside these days. Right at the harbour entrance you’ll see the famous bronze deer statues that mark the traditional spot of the ancient Colossus. A few of the old windmills still stand along the mole nearby. From the base of the pier it’s only a short walk to the walls of the Medieval Old Town, the Palace of the Grand Master and the Archaeological Museum. Elli Beach and the modern waterfront are also close by.
