Housed in the former Hospital of the Knights, the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is one of the most atmospheric museums in the Aegean. Its 15th‑century Gothic architecture—arched halls, stone courtyards, and a grand staircase—creates a dramatic setting for exploring the island’s long history. The building itself is an exhibit: the Knights of St. John once treated wounded crusaders here, and you can still see carved coats of arms on the façade. Inside, the museum’s highlight is the Aphrodite of Rhodes, a graceful 1st‑century BC statue depicting the goddess rising from the sea. Equally striking is the Crouching Aphrodite, a Hellenistic masterpiece known for its delicate movement and lifelike detail. The museum also preserves funerary steles from ancient Kamiros, showcasing finely carved scenes of daily life and family rituals. One of the most interesting sections is the display of Rhodian pottery, famous for its distinctive red‑figure and black‑figure styles. The mosaics from early Christian basilicas reveal how artistic traditions evolved after antiquity, with geometric patterns and symbolic motifs.
Rhodes Greece
The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes sits right in the heart of the Medieval Old Town of Rhodes, Greece. You’ll find it on Plateia Mousiou, also known as Great Alexander Square, Rhodes 85100. The museum is housed in the impressive 15th-century Knights’ Hospital, so the building itself is part of the attraction. It’s an easy place to reach on foot once you’re inside the old town walls. The collection covers finds from across the island, including statues, ceramics and mosaics, and you can wander through the courtyards as well as the galleries. Just a short stroll away is the Street of the Knights, the long austere lane that once housed the various “tongues” of the Order. At the top of that street stands the Palace of the Grand Master, the most striking building in the old town. Nearby you’ll also find the church of Panagia tou Kastrou and the Decorative Arts Collection. The harbour and the medieval walls are only a few minutes’ walk in the other direction. Everything is close enough that a visit to the museum fits naturally into a relaxed wander through the UNESCO-listed Old Town and its surrounding castles, churches and historic streets.
