The Church of the Holy Trinity—often called Agia Triada—is one of the most atmospheric sacred spaces inside the medieval city of Rhodes. Originally built during the late Byzantine period, it was later adapted by the Knights Hospitaller and again during the Ottoman era, giving the church a layered architectural identity. Its compact size contrasts with the grandeur of nearby Gothic buildings, yet its interior reveals centuries of devotion and artistic evolution. Inside, visitors find a blend of Byzantine and post‑Byzantine elements. The stone walls preserve traces of old frescoes, including fragments of saints and geometric borders that hint at the church’s original decoration. The wooden iconostasis, though more recent, follows traditional island craftsmanship with delicate carvings and warm colours. Small icons from the 17th and 18th centuries add depth to the space, reflecting Rhodes’ role as a crossroads of cultures. One of the most interesting features is the church’s transformation over time. During the Ottoman period it served briefly as a mosque, and subtle architectural adjustments—arched openings, modified windows—still echo that chapter. Today, restored sections highlight its Byzantine roots while preserving the marks of later eras.
Rhodes Greece
The Church of the Holy Trinity sits in the Medieval Old Town of Rhodes, Greece. You’ll find it on Ippoton Street, also known as the Street of the Knights, Rhodes 85100. This small historic church stands roughly halfway along the famous lane that once housed the different “tongues” of the Knights Hospitaller. Originally built in the 14th century as a Catholic foundation, it later served as a mosque during Ottoman times before returning to Orthodox use. The entrance still carries the coats of arms of the Holy See and England, and a few traces of old wall paintings remain inside. Just a short walk up the same street brings you to the Palace of the Grand Master. In the opposite direction you’ll reach the Archaeological Museum, housed in the former Knights’ Hospital. The church of Panagia tou Kastrou and the Decorative Arts Collection are also nearby within the medieval walls.
